Level 2: Certificate In British Sign Language

Qualification Aim
This qualification is designed to enable learners to develop their skills to communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) in a range of everyday situations. The qualification will allow learners to participate in longer and more varied conversations than at Level 1. The course will develop communication in BSL about real life, routine, and daily experiences. The learner will be able to deal with most routine communication and have enough understanding of grammar to cope with some non-routine communication.
This qualification has been developed in accordance with the National Language Standards at Level 2.
Qualification Objectives
By achieving this qualification, learners will be able to:
- acquire sufficient language to enable communication with Deaf people, including those in the workplace or at school/college, at an intermediate level;
- develop the ability to present personal, social and work-related information in BSL;
- exchange routine information with Deaf people in social life and/or the workplace or at school and college.
- Understand and give advice and instructions about everyday work and/or social matters
Qualification Structure
The qualification is divided into four units, each of which can be achieved separately. However, to achieve the full Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language Studies, learners are required to pass all four units, which are as follows:

Length of Course
The course will consist of 100 guided learning hours plus 50 hours of additional study outside the classroom. This will include access to online learning resources provided by PremierBSL.

Target Group
It is recommended that entrants should have the Level 1 Award in BSL before embarking on the Level 2 Certificate programme.
The Level 2 Certificate in BSL is suitable for those who:
- wish to acquire extended British Sign Language skills for the purpose of holding more detailed communication with Deaf people, including by family, friends and colleagues at work, school or college;
- need to acquire BSL skills as part of a programme of study or professional development;
- are studying for personal development with a view to future employment;
- wish to progress from the Level 1 Award.
The qualification is also suitable for Deaf people wishing to acquire a qualification in their own language.
Assessment
Units BSL201, BSL202 and BSL203 are externally assessed by a Signature assessor.

BSL201 | Candidates will be assessed on their understanding of a story presented in BSL on a DVD. The candidate will watch a DVD and will answer 12 questions with a choice of answers. The DVD must not be stopped at any time during the assessment and it cannot be repeated.
The pass mark for the assessment is 75%, i.e. 9/12. |
Signature |
BSL202 | Recorded BSL presentation by the candidate (3-5 mins). Candidate will pick a topic from a list provided and will have 30 minutes to prepare their presentation.
Pass mark for this assessment is 50% but candidates must also achieve two or more points for BSL Sign Order (E1) and Non-Manual Features to pass this unit – regardless of the total number of points achieved.

BSL203 | Recorded conversation (6-7 mins) about a chosen topic from a specified list; the chosen theme for BSL203 must be different to their BSL202 presentation topic. The candidate will have 30 minutes to prepare.
Pass mark for this assessment is 50% but candidates must also achieve two or more points for BSL Sign Order (E1) and Non-Manual Features to pass this unit – regardless of the total number of points achieved.
